Review of Bram Stoker’s book – Dracula, translated by Uri Radler, Sela Meir Publishing, 2022.

Stoker’s book “Dracula” (1897) belongs to classical literature. This is a book that has sold millions of copies worldwide. This is a fairly thick book (427 pages), of which 24 pages are in the form of notes and annotations.

Dracula described in the book is a vampire – an immortal monster that feeds on human blood. The origin of the legend is the Wallachian ruler Vladilius “Vlad the Impaler” Dracul who was known for his cruelty, and especially for his custom of impaling people on bayonets and displaying their corpses.

The meaning of the name “Dracula” is “dragon” and the meaning of “Dracula” is “son of a dragon”.

During his reign, Vlad fought in the Crusades against the Turks, and besides his cruelty, he was known as a liberating national hero. The connection of Vlad III to vampires was made by Stoker from historical research he conducted at the British Museum.

In addition, Stoker created some of Dracula’s features from those of Erzabet Batory, who was, according to myth, a 16th-century aristocratic serial killer who brought hundreds of girls to her castle on the grounds that she would give them an education, but tortured them to death due to her “vampiric” lust for blood. virgins

The book is about a British lawyer who comes to Transylvania to help a mysterious and kind count in business. At first everything goes well, but this is only the beginning of a hair-raising journey that includes strange injuries and suspicious bloodstains, a captain whose crew disappeared, and there was no prison, children who go wandering and disappear and boxes full of dirt. Until the end of the story, it is not clear to the lawyer which he is more: the hunter or the hunted.

However, the book seems to have been written in “first gear”, maximum second, and does not really start or gather pace. Everything takes place in Nihota, in our office among the pages of correspondence and diaries.

As someone who appreciates Guillaume Musso’s writing and considers his book “Central Park”, a book that starts in fourth gear, I had some difficulty keeping up with the slow pace of this plot. There is horror, but the tension is given only sparingly.

It should be noted that the book was adapted for the cinema as early as 1931 in a film starring the actor Bela Logsi. Since then, several films have been released and the most famous of them was Francis Ford Coppola’s version in his 1992 film starring Gary Oldman as Dracula. Even earlier, in 1979, Werner Herzog created “Nosperto the Vampire” as a tribute to the film by director F.W. Moreno – “Nosperto” from 1922.

Uri Radler’s translation is fluent, but it is not clear to me, for example, how he writes the word “taxi” in the context of a pre-motorized reality.
