U.U. Lalit was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court today and will hold office for only 74 days.

Uday Umesh Lalit, who has been appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, formally took his oath today, Saturday. President Thirelapathi Murmu administered the oath of office to him.

Who is this Uday Umesh Lalit?

Born in 1957 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, YU Lalit started his career as a lawyer in 1983. YU Lalit has appeared as a lawyer in many important cases like Babri Masjid demolition case, 2G wave case, Bollywood actor Salman Khan poaching case, Sorabuddin Sheikh encounter case. His father U.R. Lalit was an Additional Judge in the Nagpur Branch of the Bombay High Court and a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court. His grandfather, Ranganath Lalit, was a lawyer in Solapur before India’s independence.

In 2014, he was directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge due to YU Lalit’s legal background. Thus, U.U. becomes the second judge to be directly appointed as a judge in the Supreme Court without serving as a judge in a lower court or a high court. Lalit.
