Islamabad: The latest reports are that 982 people have died in the floods in Pakistan. The flood affected three and a half crore people. 1456 people were injured in the damage caused by the flood. Army has been deployed in the flood affected area for rescue and relief operations. Pakistan’s disaster management agency said more than 3,000 kilometers of roads, 150 bridges and nearly 700,000 houses were washed away or destroyed. The current political crisis in Pakistan has also affected flood rehabilitation activities.
“More than half of the country is currently under water. Millions of people have been left homeless as a result of floods caused by extraordinary monsoon rains…” reports Pakistan’s media outlet Dawn. More than 57 lakh people left their homes due to heavy rains.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh provinces continue to receive heavy rains for the second day in a row. Reports say that roads and bridges have been destroyed and crops and livestock have been destroyed. News agency PTI reports that Sindh and Balochistan were the worst hit. Pakistan Railways has suspended operations at many places in these areas.
Pakistan International Airlines suspended flights to Balochistan’s provincial capital Quetta on Friday due to bad weather. The UN Central Emergency Response Fund has already allocated $3 million to Pakistan.
The warning will continue till Tuesday, August 30 due to heavy rain. The warning states that there may be more rain in the coming days. Sindh and Balochistan provinces were the worst affected by the disaster. Pakistan International Airlines has suspended flights to Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.
Quetta and its suburbs are under water after 36 hours of rain brought life to a standstill. Videos of flooded streets and completely submerged cars are circulating on Twitter. Some also shared footage of a prominent hotel collapsing in the flood on Twitter.
