The contacts continue: Secretary General of the Teachers’ Union Beautiful Ben David and senior officials of the Ministry of Finance will hold another negotiation meeting today (Sunday). The conversation is expected to begin at 11:30 in the morning, when the fate of the opening of the school year is still unclear. In the meantime, a disconnect was registered between the teachers’ organization and the teachers’ union. The chairman of the organization Ran then said in an interview in Khan B: “We (Yapa and I) don’t talk to each other and there are reasons for this that I don’t want to go into detail at the moment.”

As mentioned, the first and probably the most central issue in the dispute between the Ministry of Finance and the Teachers’ Union is the compensation that the Ministry of Finance wants to give to teachers. The Treasury explains that most of the young teachers are employed at a low employment rate and their salary is not high, therefore they seek to reward them in a way that will keep them in the system. The Treasury points to data that show that the majority of teacher departures within the education system are done by teachers in their first years, and therefore the Treasury seeks to reward them at a higher rate than veteran teachers.

The second issue that is also at the heart of the controversy concerns the time of receiving tenure and the lack of flexibility to fire teachers. The Ministry of Finance emphasizes that in order to receive tenure in the education system within two years, which includes the internship period, according to the senior official, this is an exception compared to other positions in the civil service where tenure is usually granted within Three or five years and the Treasury is seeking to adjust the tenure acceptance period to the rest of the positions in the public service.

The third issue is vacations. The Treasury emphasizes that they are not asking for vacation days to be removed from the teachers’ calendar, but they do require “synchronization” with the Israeli calendar so that if there is a holiday or a holiday is prohibited at the beginning of the week, the teachers will study on that day but at the end of the week they will get time off.

In the meantime, Lieberman is expected to meet today with Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who decided to get into the thick of the issue in order to reach agreements between the parties. Alongside the fact that there has been no progress in the talks between the Ministry of Finance and the Teachers’ Union, there is at the same time a front with the teachers’ organization which has announced that it is also planning a strike on September 1. This means that the education system in Israel is closed up to and including the twelfth grade.
