Netflix introduces new features in games, and prepares to launch cloud services

Netflix’s game catalog has not yet become a great success, but the company continues to invest in the development of the platform. The latest addition is a system that allows players to create a personal profile, choosing a unique username that will be displayed to the other players.

The system can be used to create ranking tables and compare achievements between players, as well as for multiplayer games where players can check if their friends are online at the same moment and invite them to a battle. These are of course features that already exist in other games, and are even embedded within the operating system itself in the case of iOS and Android, but until now Netflix games have not had social elements.

In the longer term, it seems that Netflix is also considering offering games in another streaming model, similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming or NVIDIA’s GeForce Now. In a job ad that the company recently published, Netflix is looking for a developer who can help create the appropriate technology for a cloud gaming service.

“You will help develop technology for running many games in our cloud infrastructure, and also in creating development tools for external developers so that they can create quality games for the Netflix cloud,” the company announced.

As of today, Netflix’s game catalog amounts to about 25 games available for download on iOS and Android devices.
