Ron Tomer against the teachers:

The Association of Manufacturers led by Ron Tomer, today (Monday) submitted a petition to the National Labor Court in Jerusalem against the Teachers’ Union in Israel following the intention to shut down classes on September 1st as part of the long-standing struggle to improve the conditions of teachers. “Each week shutdown of the education system deducts about NIS 1.8 billion from the economy’s output,” said the Association of Manufacturers.

The association asked to order the teaching staff to open the school year as a series without sanctions or disruptions of any kind, and in addition, “to limit the right to strike and its scope, in order to reduce the damage to the economy”

The court demanded that the teachers’ union, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance respond to the petition of the manufacturers’ association and submit their official position by tomorrow at 19:00.

The President of the Federation of Manufacturers and the Chairman of the Presidency of Employers and Businesses, Dr. Ron Tomer said in response: “We thank the court for seriously considering our petition and hope that it will grant its patronage to the negotiations to resolve the crisis, for the sake of the economy, the parents and the necessary reforms in the Ministry of Education.”

As I recall, earlier today, Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman tweeted on his Twitter account on the same subject: “Anyone who says that the debate between the Ministry of Finance and the Teachers’ Union is about NIS 800 million is wrong and misleading.”

According to Lieberman, “the reasons for the debate are different – they are about the 78% of the public who are not satisfied with the education system, about the emphasis on excellence and not on seniority, about our demand to synchronize freely between the Israeli economy and the education system and about the powers that should be given to administrators – to fire unsuitable teachers, to incentivize Outstanding teachers and to give the option of personal contracts in the education system.”
