IIT Chennai researchers are developing boxing analytics software to boost India’s medal haul at the 2024 Olympics.

The Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics at IIT-Chennai has developed an analytics software called Smartboxer that has several versions. Currently, IIT Chennai is working with Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka to develop this software to help boxers.

In this regard, in a press release issued by IIT, Chennai, “Sports Engineering, a relatively new field, will use mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence, wearables with Internet-of-things as an interdisciplinary field. To understand sports-related things like physiology, biodynamics, etc. Engineering can be helpful, and it can help solve problems in play and better design play equipment.

Increasing Olympic Medals To achieve the ambitious goal of increasing the number of medals in the 2024 Olympic Games, the Government of India has shortlisted a few key sports and is actively focusing its efforts on them. Sports include archery, boxing, badminton, wrestling, hockey, weightlifting, cycle racing, athletics.

Developing countries like India will need a decade or more to win more medals at the Olympics. Adopting technology-based player performance enhancement is critical to achieving this goal.

It is with this objective in mind that IIT Madras is developing the SmartBoxer software,” it said.

John Warburton, head of youth development at Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) Boxing, says, “This system can help analyze a fighter’s performance in order to improve it. What are a fighter’s strengths? Where do they need to focus on action positions, punches, defensive skills? “We can tell which ones are which? In terms of technology, tactics. I’m excited about the system’s ability to use data and artificial intelligence to identify coaching points and interpret insights on players.”

Professor Ranganathan Srinivasan, associate professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras, and head of the Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics, says, “Technologies currently being developed to identify, understand and creatively improve performance between the coach and the elite athlete will serve as a bridge to win more medals at the Olympic Games. “Smartboxer is one of the various initiatives undertaken by IIT Madras to achieve the ambitious goal of the Government of India,” he said.
