All young Swiss parents who work full time have already asked themselves the question: but how do the French manage to have access to quality childcare without breaking the bank? Well, it is the fruit of a very centralised, proactive, subsidized education model when it is not entirely state-run and ultimately quite demanding, whatever one may say. A gigantic machine which, if its educational content is often questioned, has the ambition to ensure a universal service on the scale of a population of nearly 70 million inhabitants. A policy often described as a model for promoting female careers and the French birth rate, which remains one of the highest in Europe, even if it has been falling for a few years.
