A man was kept in a freezer for 11 days after his boat sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Finally he miraculously escaped. Romualdo Macedo Rodríguez, 44, left Oiapoque in Amapa state in northern Brazil at the end of July on a boat to go to Ilet la Mare.

Rodriguez planned to spend a few days fishing. But suddenly, during the journey, his boat started to get flooded. With that, he sought refuge in the freezer on the boat. Had to wade through water without food or water.

Rodriguez reckons he lost at least five kilos in 11 days. Rodríguez says that the most difficult part of those 11 days was thirst. This fridge was like god to him meanwhile. Rodriguez says it was a miracle.

Rodriguez was suffering from dehydration when he was rescued. All the clothes were torn. He also suffered from sunburn. He was begging the rescue workers for water.

Rodriguez says he was afraid the shark might attack him. Recalling the rescue operation, he says, ‘I heard a voice. A boat hovers over the freezer. They thought there was no one in it. Then slowly they came closer. My vision started to fade. And I said, oh my god, the boat. I raised my hands and begged for help.’

Despite this, Rodriguez’s ordeal was not over. After the boat returned to shore, he was given first aid and then arrested for crossing into the South American country of Suriname without documents. He reportedly spent 16 days in prison in Paramaribo.

Later, he boarded a plane and returned to his country.
