The City You Must See In Germany (When The Pandemic Is Over) | Germany Information and Travel Tips | DW

The popular international publishing house Lonely Planet has published its recommendations for tourists. And today this is doubly good news. First, a long tradition has been revived. Due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, Lonely Planet did not publish its famous list, but only noted several key projects for 2021 and inspiring personalities. And now such a list with recommendations of which countries, cities and regions of the world are worth visiting next year – “Best in Travel 2022” – is there again! The second pleasant moment: the German Freiburg im Breisgau entered the top 3 cities of this rating. He lost only to Auckland in New Zealand and Taipei (Taiwan).

Auckland won first place in “Best in Travel 2022”

Taipei Ranked # 3 in Best in Travel 2022

How Freiburg conquered the authors of Lonely Planet

As noted in the publishing house, one can only envy the standard of living in this German city. Most tourists, when they mention Freiburg, will probably remember its main attraction – Freiburg Cathedral, which was founded in 1200. However, it seems that he did not become the main argument in favor of awarding the city the honorary title of “the main tourist destination of 2022”, but, as noted by the publisher, the charisma of the “capital of the Black Forest” and its deliberate environmental strategy. Freiburg, located in one of the main tourist regions of Germany, is primarily a student city with a total population of 230 thousand people.

Lonely Planet emphasizes that this city can be considered the best example of how to implement eco-initiatives. Here they were able not only to prevent the construction of a nuclear power plant (already in 1975), but also to make the bicycle the main mode of transport (there are twice as many bicycles in the city as there are cars), as well as to install a record number of solar panels in Baden-Württemberg, which are visible not only on the rooftops of private houses, but also on public buildings, churches and the football stadium.

Tourists have a lot to see in this cozy city – in addition to green technologies. The small canals, commonly called “Bächle” in the city, are the old town with numerous cafes and, of course, the town hall, which became the world’s first zero-energy city administration.
