Compassion empathic predisposition and sensitivity of

Even his own suffering
,
the case to underline.
The neurologist Michiko Kunira Bruno gives concrete evidence of this in the pages of the Jama Neurology magazine on August 15, recounting the conflict experienced in the doubt whether or not to go to her hospital, in Honolulu, although with a malaise perhaps attributable to Covid (with a negative early test ), or stay at home to protect patients and colleagues. In the end, her self-giving spirit prevailed towards those who had come a long way and had been waiting for a long time to be treated by her. A subsequent test sanctioned that it was Covid, with related feelings of guilt. The doctor concludes her reflection by inviting herself and the other doctors to have more compassion, understanding for herself, even for the benefit of others.

Not exactly a novelty, given that St. Paul already claimed that to love others one must also love oneself, but today it is particularly relevant today for a reason that may seem paradoxical: compassion towards herself in the case of the Hawaiian neurologist should have coincided with a active abstention from work, an inaction, if we want to say so, which in reality would have had all the trappings of a real action, with positive repercussions on patients and colleagues.

The paradox insists on the fact that instead we live in a planetary cultural context in which the opposite is constantly happening: the mainstream perception as we now say, that the active decision, the practice (in the case in question, the decision not to fare something) is secondary, if not completely irrelevant to theto express something: an opinion on a social network, a selfie in which the protagonist is never the background (perhaps magnificent) but his own pose, or a vote on an app for restaurants.

The primary urgency of being there through the declaration of self, whatever it is, overshadows true participation in public affairs, social responsibility, not only for a doctor, but for anyone and in any circumstance of life. All pieces of a picture in which the great absentee risks being the commonplace, not intended as a prejudice, but as a space in which true relationships are played out, which are the threads that weave the warp of existence. That also the plan in which the political action that belongs to each of us takes shape and that we will shortly be called to express not through an affirmation of self in the form of an image, judgment or invective end as itself, but in the form of a vote that will have a specific concrete weight, also on medical and health issues (the topic of these pages). It won’t be the same as putting a like.
It is worth underlining, however, that in this specific case compassion, suffering together (literally) cannot be declined in not doing something.
