The South American country of Chile is preparing to rewrite history. A referendum will be held in the country on Sunday on whether to accept the new constitution. About one and a half crore people will participate in the verdict writing. The new constitutional committee has rewritten the constitution during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, which imposed inequality. The 1980 constitution, which incorporated the neo-liberal policy, was replaced by a new constitution that included all sections of the people. The new constitution received the support of 106 members of the 155-member constitution-making committee. A majority in the plebiscite will give the constitution final approval.

A new constitution for the country is the main promise of the left-wing government that took office in November under the leadership of young revolutionary Gabriel Borik. Equitable distribution of wealth, ensuring social rights of citizens, ensuring gender equality and special treatment for tribal communities are the essence of the new constitution. The Constitution offers the right to organize and bargain. The new constitution allows for the formation of trade unions and strikes. This was not in Pinochet’s constitution.

The new constitution guarantees that the tribal people can use natural resources as they see fit. Nature conservation and prevention of climate change is taken as a mission. Digital connectivity will be made a citizen’s right. About 80 percent of people in the country participated in the referendum on whether to amend the constitution in October 2020 and in the referendum to elect the members of the committee preparing the draft constitution in 2021.
