The departure of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Soviet Union, without full official honors or the presence of President Vladimir Putin. Burial was at Novodevichy Cemetery after a public viewing at the Hall of Columns. He was buried next to his wife, Raisa, who died in 1999.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, US Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan and ambassadors of countries like Germany, France and Spain also came to pay their last respects. Gorbachev was accorded military honors at the Hall of Columns, the final resting place of Lenin, Stalin and Brezhnev. However, there was no full official honor. Putin said that he will not attend the ceremony due to official commitments. Putin had already paid his last respects at the hospital.
When Russian President Boris Yeltsin died in 2007, there was a national mourning and full official honors.
