These 6 countries are responsible for 90% of the garbage floating in the Pacific Ocean.

More than 90 percent of the garbage floating in the Pacific Ocean comes from just 6 countries.

Pacific Ocean is known as the largest ocean on earth. Tons of garbage is dumped in the sprawling wasteland. The amount of plastic waste has increased especially in the last century. The study notes that most of the waste comes from two countries: Japan and China.

After analysis and systematic modeling, a team of researchers from the Ocean Cleanup Project and Wageningen University published their report Thursday (Sept. 1) in the journal Science Reports.

The report noted that the subtropical ocean circulation region in the North Pacific Ocean is currently covered by tens of thousands of tons of floating plastic debris.

Debris is scattered over millions of square kilometers. The area where the garbage has accumulated is referred to as the ‘North Pacific Garbage Patch’ (NPGP).

Earlier, experts explored how oceans have gradually turned into garbage dumps as a sign of how global oceans are affected by the widespread use of plastics and their disposal on the ocean surface.

The study noted that most of the litter was made up of fishing nets and ropes. Meanwhile, the rest is mostly made up of hard plastic products and pieces of plastic.

Plastic has identifiable evidence of its origin. This helps experts identify where the plastic originated.

In the new research, scientists analyzed approximately 573 kilograms of dry hard plastic debris collected in 2019 with the help of The Ocean Cleanup.

Researchers were able to trace the origins of 232 objects. The highest amount of waste came from Japan at 33.6%, followed by China at 32.3%, South Korea at 9.9%, the United States at 6.5%, Taiwan at 5.6% and Canada at 4.7%.

During the analysis, they found that more than a quarter of the debris was ‘abandoned or discarded fishing gear’ (ALDFG). According to researchers’ calculations, litter in the NPGP is 10 times greater than that from fishing activities.
