OTT platform Netflix is currently embroiled in a controversy. This controversy has arisen in the Gulf countries. Netflix has been asked to remove objectionable content from the site. In a joint statement, all members of the Gulf Cooperation Council called on Netflix to stop airing content that is against Islam and Islamic social values. If Netflix doesn’t do this, the council can take legal action against it.
A group of Gulf States protested
This Council of Gulf States includes 6 Middle Eastern countries namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar. The council said in a statement that some content on the Netflix site violates the media content regulations of the Gulf countries. At the same time, the GCC Council said in a joint statement that Netflix should remove some content broadcast for children.

Some of the content that the Gulf states oppose
Netflix did not respond to the objection by the Gulf States. It is believed that the Gulf States Council has issued a report on some of the content on Netflix’s site regarding homosexuality. Previously, several Middle Eastern countries had asked for the removal of such scenes from movies or web series showing gay or lesbian kissing scenes. In June, Saudi Arabia banned the screening of UAE Disney Movies’ ‘Light Year’ in cinemas. After this it was said that the homosexual relationship of the characters in the film was against the media regulation standards of these countries.
Rules of the Gulf States
Homosexuality is considered a crime in most Gulf countries, including Iran. Notably, on Monday, Iran sentenced two LGBTQ activists to death.
