New Delhi: India falls one step lower in United Nations Human Development Index. India is ranked 132nd in the list of 191 countries. In the December 2020 index, India was ranked 131 out of 189 countries. The Human Development Index is calculated on the basis of people’s life expectancy, education level and standard of living.

Since 1990, India has been starting at 129 and going down. India’s Human Development Index (HDI) in 2020 was 0.642. In 2021, it dropped to 0.633. It is estimated that the reason for India’s backwardness in 2020-2021 is the decline in life expectancy. Switzerland, Norway and Iceland continue to top the list. The report assesses that the Covid pandemic has set back humanitarian progress by five years and fueled a wave of global uncertainty.

Sri Lanka ranks 73rd and China ranks 79th in the Human Development Index. Bangladesh is at 129th position and Bhutan is at 127th position. Pakistan is ranked 161st.
