The peasants of the former GDR facing the loss of their land

Peter Hase is a 77-year-old farmer from the Quedlinburg region, formerly located in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). After reunification, he decided to create an agricultural business which very quickly employed 18 people and farmed nearly 1,600 hectares of land.

Thirty years later, Peter Hase can employ only 8 people after losing fields he can no longer afford to rent, reports the public information site daily News.

After three decades of privatization, the German Federal State has put an end to the sale of arable land which remained to it in the former GDR. From now on, cultivable fields can still be rented, but no longer bought. The objective is to curb speculation on agricultural plots and the rise in land prices.
