Alber Albez was born in Casablanca, Morocco, grew up in Holon, studied in Shankar, moved to New York, conquered Paris and died there a year ago from Corona. The stations of his life’s journey are presented in an impressive and magnificent exhibition that opened at the Holon Design Museum. This is the second fashion exhibition opening in 2021 at the museum, which defines the field of fashion as a representation of design and not as a purely useful field.
The exhibition extends over all the floors and spaces of the museum. In the lower gallery is presented the latest collection he designed, the new brand AZ FACTORY created in 2021. The collection is presented inspired by shop windows he designed for the Lanvin fashion house and in groups that symbolize the stations of his life: Tangier, Holon, Paris and New York.
The journey through Elbaz’s life story is presented in the peripheral corridor that includes quotes, stories, photographs, fashion illustrations, personal belongings and items that have never been revealed. Also on display is the “dress of peace” designed by Elbaz for Meryl Streep for the 2012 Oscar ceremony.
In the upper gallery, the exhibition “Love Brings Love” is displayed, which was brought from Paris after it was shown there after his death. This is a tribute exhibition in which 46 of the world’s leading fashion designers present clothing sets inspired by Elbaz.
In the laboratory space, an 8-minute video is shown telling about the behind-the-scenes work of Elbed at the Lanvin fashion house.
The creation of the exhibition involved Alber’s partner Alex Ko, Elbaz’s teacher in Shanker Sheli Wertheim, Hania Destal, the design studio Steinsquiz who accompanied Elbaz in the AZ project and Elbaz’s family in Israel.
