How to defrost a freezer

DYour freezer compartment has been taking good care of you all summer long. It was running at full speed and provided the entire family with ice cream cones and the tired adults with ice cubes for the cold drink right on time from Gin O’Clock. A layer of ice has probably formed in it, which is no longer legally allowed to cross under polar class four of the International Maritime Organization.

Here’s how it works: Turn off the device and remove the drawers. Now comes the trick: heat water in the kettle, pour the steaming water into a bowl and place in the freezer. When the ice has accumulated properly, place a baking sheet or a towel underneath to catch the worst of it. Then close the door.

Now you should be able to hear it crackling, because in there it thaws faster than the slopes in spring. You can let the steam do its work for about half an hour, then put a towel on the floor and open the door. The whole fjord should be sloshing at you now.

If something is still hanging somewhere, we recommend a dough card or wooden spatula to remove the rest, but please don’t use sharp ones. Wipe it out with washing-up liquid and you’re done.
