Dehydration in babies now monitored by new teat

A recently developed teat continuously monitors the electrolyte levels in the blood of premature babies. Until now, this was measured by taking blood from these babies twice a day, but that can be dangerous. That reports Vakblad Early.

The teat measures how much potassium and sodium is in the baby’s saliva. The measurements are automatically forwarded to healthcare providers via Bluetooth.

The results are just as reliable as those of the blood samples. However, premature babies benefit from as few invasive treatments as possible, so this new teat is a welcome alternative to blood collection.
