At its weekly meeting on Sunday, the government approved the plan of Transport Minister Merav Michaeli. This is a nationwide multi-year plan that fundamentally damages the status quo and the Jewish identity and even opens the door to the operation of public transportation on Shabbat. According to the plan, they will work to establish regional authorities for transportation, which are a connecting link between the local government authorities and the central government.

As part of the plan, each local authority will be associated with a transportation space without exception, according to transportation relationships between the authorities. All transportation areas will manage the transportation and traffic in the area based on powers and roles that the Ministry of Transportation and the authorities will transfer to them.

The regional transportation authorities will act in the first stage as a local traffic sign authority, initiate plans for public transportation and plan and implement joint transportation projects, with each regional authority having a representative council for all the authorities in the region. Later, with the advancement of the legislation, the authorities will be delegated extensive powers to publish and operate public company tenders, enforcement and more.

According to the plan, within a month the Ministry of Transportation will publish draft regulations for the establishment of the Regional Transportation Authority in the Jerusalem Metropolitan Area, and by the beginning of 2023 the Regional Transportation Authority will be established in the Dan Metropolis. The multi-year plan will set goals for the establishment of regional authorities also in the Haifa and Beer Sheva metropolitan areas and in the other transportation areas, including the Negev and the Galilee.

Following the decision, Shas said in response: “This is a populist decision. We will petition for cancellation. A government that did not receive the training of the people is carrying out a serious hijacking of a fundamental change of the status quo and a serious damage to the Jewish identity just to garner votes for the elections. Shame and disgrace that this is what has to be offered. Everyone knows that this is a populist decision, without authority, which will be changed immediately when we establish a national government supported by the majority of the people, who oppose turning the holy Sabbath into another working day. Shas will immediately contact the legal advisor to the government to stop the outrageous move.”

MK Moshe Arbel of Shas turned to the government ombudsman against the decision: “A transitional government does not win the trust of the public and the Knesset. I urge you not to allow hijackings to be carried out during the twilight period between revenues and to abide by the provisions of the law and the ruling.”

MK Moshe Abutbul, chairman of the lobby for Shabbat observance, said following the government’s decision: “This is a bad decision, the whole trend of giving powers to the mayors is mainly aimed at allowing them to operate public transportation on Shabbat, which until now they have been legally prevented from doing. The government’s proposal at the last minute is not ripe from the point of view Constitutional and her whole purpose now during an election period is to loudly exclaim that they will allow public transportation on Shabbat and we will change the status quo through the back door (perhaps also of the bus) and this and only this is what Rabbi Michaeli Kosher needs to pump up her voters, that she is destroying every Jewish part of Shabbat issues in order to garner votes And instead of taking care of the huge failures of her office that scream from all sides, she prefers to attack the values of the Jewish state, in order to get media backing that will expose her many failures.”

MK Abutbul emphasized: “It is more unfortunate to see that this was done on the watch of the kippa wearers Bennett, Elkin and Khanna and now it is done in front of the Minister of the Interior Ayelet Shaked who is in charge of the authorities and is trying in every way to tie herself to the Jewish Home party for Brodni and Co., and shows in her ticket the so-called concern for tradition and the country Judith and here in the difficult decision against Shabbat she disappeared and disappeared. The public will know about her loose connection to the observance of Shabbat in the public space that broke into our clothing today with the unfortunate decision that was made.”

The chairman of the Torah Judaism faction, MK Meir Parosh, also attacked the decision and said: “The failed Minister of Transportation has set a goal to gain votes on the backs of the traditionalists in Israel, while harming the sanctity of the Sabbath and Jewish identity. To our shame, the spokesperson continues to let the transitional government do As much as she likes without any obligation to the rules of the proper administrator. We will do everything to replace this bad government.”

The chairman of the Noam party, MK Avi Maoz, responded: “While the citizens of Israel are stuck in traffic jams, Merav Michaeli continues to use the Ministry of Transportation as a tool for her campaign, and to make Israel a state for all its citizens. This is a despicable hijacking during an election period, which would not have been legal if there was a right-wing government here After the elections, we will regulate by law the ban on public transportation on Shabbat, as has been the case all these years in Israel. We have established a Jewish state and we will keep it as such.”
