Apple’s iOS 16 iPhone update, released this week, lets iPhone users add small squares or rectangles of information known as “widgets” to the lock screen.

This helped popularize the Chinese app Top Widgets, which climbed to the second most popular free app on the App Store after social media app BeReal.

I had never heard of the app before, so I downloaded it to try it out.

Top Widgets allow you to customize your home screen or lock screen with small squares or rectangles of information, such as how much storage space is left on your phone, photos, how much steps you’ve taken, custom icons for apps and more. There is a lot that Apple offers by default, and this may be one of the reasons for its popularity.

It makes good use of the new always-on display on the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, which still displays UI elements on the screen even when the phone is idle. These phones are released on Friday.

This is what the app looks like.

To get started, just download the most important widgets from the App Store.

You do not need the latest iPhone version to use the app. But first you have to make sure that you have installed iOS 16 to get widgets on your lock screen. IOS 16 is available for iPhone 8 and above. Home screen widgets have been available since last year.

Next, open the app and select the widget you want to add to your lock screen or home screen.

You can choose from a lot of things, like quickly toggling cellular or Wi-Fi on and off, calendar, screen brightness, photos, reminders, and even a few animated emojis. Browse under the “LockScreen” section for specific options that can be added to your lock screen.

Click Save after you choose what you want.

As you can see from my background, my widget tells me how many steps I’ve taken, how much battery is left on my iPhone, and even how much storage space my iPhone is using.
