A snippet of a film from the Disney group has triggered a wave of hate and then a wave of sympathy on the Internet in the last few days: In the trailer for the live-action adaptation “Arielle, the Mermaid”, which the company presented at the weekend, Halle Bailey is briefly in the spotlight for the first time to see the main role. It had been known since 2019 that the black actress would play Arielle – but the pictures now shown were very often commented on racistly and insultingly on the Internet.
However, many parents countered this with their own films, especially on Tiktok, which showed the reactions of their black children to the trailer: The joy that the little viewers showed about the fairytale character in their skin color was shared and clicked millions of times, thus triggering one “Candy-storm” off, the positive counter-model to “Shitstorm”. “The Little Mermaid” was a huge hit for Disney as an animated film in 1989.
