from Stefania Ulivi

The actor is an Alzheimer’s hitman in Martin Campbell’s thriller starring Guy Pierce and Monica Bellucci. I enjoy action movies but sometimes I forget the lines

Time, to put it in a song, definitely on his side. She started playing in Hollywood Serie A at the age of 41, after a long and respectable apprenticeship, thanks to Spielberg and Schindler’s List. At 50, he reinvented himself as action movie stars like Taken and had already taught the Jedi trade at Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi. He has over a hundred titles to his credit, with directors such as Scorsese, the Coen brothers, Neil Jordan, Atom Egoyan, Ridley Scott. Now at 70, last June, Liam Neeson enters theaters with a new killer role in Memory by Martin Campbell with Guy Pearce and Monica Bellucci. And in 2023 we will find him in the version, signed by Neil Jordan, of detective Philip Marlowe, in the role that was of Humphrey Bogart, Elliot Gould and Robert Mitchum.

Memory the remake of the Belgian film by Carl Joos and Erik Van Looy. She plays a killer on her last assignment who has to deal with the first signs of senile dementia.

Alex Lewis is one of the most complex characters I’ve ever played. a killer, he makes his living by killing people. tired, he has lost the will to live, he realizes he is sick. the bad, the good here Guy Pierce, cop. But his is an ethical push.

That is to say?

a thriller, I don’t want to reveal too much of the plot. I can say that when he understands that his clients are linked to child prostitution trafficking, he makes a choice. He wants to redeem himself. But this does not erase its ambiguities. I really liked it for its shades of gray, not the classic villain.

He started in action movies at the age of 50, an age when others quit. What effect does it have on her?

When I get some scripts I ask my agents: do they know how old I am? I am lucky, I am aware of that. I turned 70 in June, I shot this movie when I was 69 I can’t pretend to have 35, but not even 45 or 50. If you want to act, regardless of the type of film, you have to keep fit, sleep, take care of you. They are the weapons of the trade. But I’m not quite the fitness obsessed type.

So how do you prepare for such a role?

To my stunt coach Mark Vanseluw, who I’ve worked with for years – at least 25 films together – I said: show me how someone my age fights. I can’t pretend to be Jackie Chan, of which I’m a fan too.

What about dementia research?

I’ve done it, I’ve read books and seen a very touching doc. But the thing that served me the most was having a close friend in Ireland suffering from the first signs of Alzheimer’s. something upsetting, the slow loss of memory, of control.

How do you live the passing time?

I don’t worry about getting old but it also happens to me to try to remember a name, a joke. As I said, I believe that everyone in the family, among friends, knows someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s. I know well I can’t complain.

Monica Bellucci Davana Sealman. What was it like acting with her?

went very well, a person with whom you get along immediately. I love it, as I believe at least half of the world’s male population. I love his Italian films and also his 007. Guy was also a great workmate.

What kind of actor?

There are colleagues who like to emphasize the narrative arc of their characters, I am one of those who trusts the director. The story of him, I am at his service and leave the judgment to the viewer. I’ve known Martin since the eighties, old school like me, I love his cinema. I am happy that Memory is out in theaters, after these two years of pandemic. I used to go there as a child, even in the mornings, to see westerns.

Which films are you most proud of?

Schindler’s List e Michael Collins, Certain. But even this last one.

She finished filming Neil Jordan’s Marlowe movie where she stars with Diane Kruger and Jessica Lange. What can you anticipate?

We finished shooting last winter in Barcelona, I can say that Neil did a great job, he didn’t try to emulate the previous versions. And I’m embarrassed to say, that while he is a mystery reader, a big fan of formidable writers like Jo Nesb, Henning Mankell, I had never read Raymond Chandler. But now I don’t want to stop reading it.
