Chennai: A third railway terminal has been set up at Tambaram and is operational since 2018. People from the surrounding area including Tambaram, Perungalathur, Vandalur, Guduvanchery use the Tambaram railway station a lot. Due to this, the number of passengers coming and going here has crossed 2.30 lakhs.

However, the allegation of insufficient improvement in basic amenities for travelers persists. In this situation, Southern Railway is planning to gradually improve the basic infrastructure works at Tambaram railway station. Regarding this, Southern Railway officials said: Due to space constraints at Chennai Central, Egmore railway station, additional trains could not be run.

Due to this, the work of gradually expanding the Tambaram railway station is going on. We are gradually carrying out works such as expansion of platforms, improvement of yards, installation of ‘escalator, lift’ facilities and ‘CCTV’ cameras where necessary. The initial phase of work is underway to widen platforms 7 and 8 and extend the length of platforms 5 and 6 at this station. We are going to carry out these works up to 10 crore rupees. Once these works are completed, additional passenger facilities can be provided on the platforms. Similarly, trains can be run with additional coaches. Thus they said.
