Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to pay a diplomatic visit to Israel after the Knesset elections – this was reported today (Tuesday) in the media in Turkey. If the visit goes ahead, it will be the first time a Turkish president has come to Israel since 2005.

According to the reports, Erdogan met last night with the heads of Jewish communities in the US, and told them that he is “interested in visiting Israel soon” – but did not specify a specific date, except that the visit will not take place before the elections on November 1. It was also reported that Erdogan claimed that anti-Semitism constitutes “Crime against humanity”.

Now it’s official: Lapid will meet with King Abdullah

The current report comes just hours before the President’s meeting with Prime Minister Yair Lapid in New York. This will be the first meeting between an Israeli Prime Minister and a Turkish President since Erdogan’s meeting with then Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in 2008. The meeting came a day after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the appointment of Irit Lilian as Israel’s new ambassador to Turkey, after there had been no diplomatic presence in the country for the past 4 years.
