Sony launched the PlayStation 5 in 2020 and since then the company has only added some minor chassis improvements to the newer console, not to mention a major redesign. None since the original console was released.

And now a report (from Insider Gaming) indicates that the Japanese tech company is planning to launch a new PS5 model with a detachable drive in September 2023, as Tom Henderson is an industry insider, who also correctly predicted the arrival of DualSense Edge consoles, and also claimed that Sony is currently working on the new version of the console.

According to the report, Sony may sell the drive attached to the console or may offer the detachable part separately, and PS5 owners will be able to connect the drive to the console using the USB-C port on the back, but the report did not say whether the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

Owners will be allowed to connect the drive via the front USB-C port, and Sony could add this functionality to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition through a software update that may also help boost sales of this console as it will free owners from the digital-only ecosystem.

The company is expected to design a new console chassis called “Chassis D” that will likely run on the same hardware as its predecessors, and the detachable drive is also supposed to blend in with the overall look of the PS5 and will not look like an external device for the console, and may also replace the upcoming PS5. With the drive replaced by the digital version that did not sell well to the company.
