A total of 225 people died on the country’s roads during the months of July and August this year, a figure that represents 19% more than the fatalities recorded in the same period last year and 5% more than in the 2019, reference year, according to the record provided by AECA-ITV. In this way, the summer of 2022 has become the one with the highest road accident rate of the last three years.

Although there are many factors that could be generating this increase in road fatalities, there is one that is having a direct impact: the high absenteeism in the ITV. According to the Spanish Association of Collaborating Entities of the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles at the end of August, the percentage of vehicles that circulate on the country’s roads without the technical inspection up to date is around 40%, a figure that represents 13 % more than that registered in the same period of 2019, when absenteeism in the ITV was around 27%.

«The state of the technical inspection of a vehicle is directly related to its safety, since the preventive work of the ITV is essential to determine the conditions in which it is found and reduce or avoid risks on the road. If a vehicle has a defect in any of its systems, it is more likely to cause or suffer an accident,” he assured. Guillermo Magazmanaging director of AECA-ITV.

This is a risk that increases even more over the years, so the aging of the automotive fleet in Spain is another factor that would be generating an increase in road accidents. The possibility of death or serious injury increases as vehicle years increase.
