Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Rohingya refugees are having serious consequences for Bangladesh’s economy, environment, security and the country’s future growth. Sheikh Hasina also requested the United Nations to intervene in the matter. Hasina was addressing the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
“The presence of the Rohingya has serious implications for the economy, environment, security and socio-political environment of Bangladesh. Human trafficking, drug trafficking and cross-border crime are all on the rise. Sheikh Hasina said that if this problem continues, it may even affect the security beyond the country.
In 2017, Rohingyas fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh en masse. But so far they have not been able to be sent back to Myanmar. “Many problems in the country are hindering the repatriation of the Rohingyas. She added that it is expected that there will be an effective intervention of the UN in this regard.
