Amman- _- From stress to the wrong type of toothpaste, an orthodontist has revealed the “shocking” causes of sensitive teeth and how to prevent pain. According to what was published by the “Russia Today” website.
Dr Khaled Kassem, senior orthodontist at the European leading orthodontics chain Impress, said: ‘Anyone with sensitive teeth knows it’s no joke, whether you experience short-term tingling when biting into ice cream or experiencing unbearable levels of pain when eating an ice cream. Normal food and drink, sensitive teeth can make your daily life uncomfortable.”
The expert shared the most common causes of tooth sensitivity as well as how to protect them. “The level of pain can vary greatly depending on the severity of the allergy,” said Dr. Kassem. But the most common allergens include hot, cold, sweet or sour foods and drinks.”
Food and drinks
sour or sweet
Dr. Qassem said: “There are several things that cause sensitivity to the teeth, the most common being eating or drinking very acidic or sweet foods that cause enamel erosion. And if you start your day with a drink of hot water and lemon, be careful, as the high level of acid deteriorates the enamel of your teeth, which leads to the appearance of the delicate layer of dentin underneath.”
Wrong type of toothpaste
Kassem revealed that some toothpastes may cause pain, saying: “Abrasive toothpastes that aim to whiten your teeth also cause enamel erosion.
Sensitivity can be a temporary or long-term side effect of trying to whiten your teeth, so it is best to check the ingredients before putting anything on your teeth.”
Vitamin deficiency
Aside from the foods and products you include in your routine, what you lack may also be the cause of your sensitive teeth.
The expert explained: “It has been proven that a deficiency of various vitamins causes tooth sensitivity.
This includes: Calcium (which is known to strengthen our bones), Vitamin D (which can cause tooth decay) and Vitamin B12 (which can increase the risk of gum disease).
Stress
Stress is not good for any aspect of your health, including your teeth. “Perhaps the most shocking thing is that stress may be the main cause of your sensitive teeth,” said Dr. Kassem. And if you suffer from constant stress and start grinding your teeth, not only will your teeth become sensitive, but it may also cause other health problems from headaches to hearing disorders.”
Other factors such as pregnancy and dental treatments can leave your teeth feeling sore, so Qasim shared some tips for what to do to prevent sensitive teeth.
How to prevent tooth sensitivity
“Given that the most common cause of sensitive teeth is the gradual breakdown of the protective layer of enamel, there are several ways to prevent this from happening in the first place,” Kassem noted.
Dr. Qassem’s advice includes the following:

  • Use an appropriate toothbrush.
  • Do not apply too much pressure when brushing, as this will lead to excessive wear.
  • Visit your dentist regularly to maintain oral health.
  • Do not consume a lot of acidic or sweet foods.
  • Avoid home remedies for teeth whitening.
