New York: Russia supports India to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced this in his speech at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
He said the Security Council could be made more democratic by including representation from countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Russian Foreign Minister suggested India and Brazil as some of the countries to be considered for permanent membership in the UNSC.
“There is potential to make the Security Council more democratic through the representation of countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America. India and Brazil, in particular, are major international powers. They should be considered for permanent membership in the council,” reports news agency ANI.
In a joint statement to the Security Council. India and 31 other countries have demanded reforms in its working methods. Delegates noted that this is essential to make this body more representative, legitimate and effective.
The joint statement said it asserted the need for urgent and comprehensive reform of the Council to bring the United Nations into line with contemporary world realities.
Addressing the assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke of a referendum on Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine to join the Russian Federation after seven months of war. At the same time, the Russian Foreign Minister lashed out at the West.
Russia’s polls in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhia provinces in Ukraine are expected to last until Tuesday. The Russian Foreign Minister said that the crisis surrounding the war is growing and the international situation is rapidly deteriorating.
