The Sharjah Optical Observatory at the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy and Space Science and Technology of the University of Sharjah was able to monitor the change that resulted from the collision of the “NASA” spacecraft with the asteroid Dimorphos, which is the first task of finding solutions to defend the planet against these dangerous asteroids, which are classified as Near-Earth asteroids, numbering more than 15,000, using many of the academy’s modern astronomical tools. An event that was also participated in by the largest optical astronomical observatories around the world.
The observatory recorded a clear change in the luminosity of the asteroid during and after the collision, and the apparent change in its brightness showed a noticeable increase in its brightness. The second in 2021 and headed directly towards the asteroid (Didymos) to reach a huge speed of more than 22,000 km / h. This huge speed is important for the success of the experiment, and the probe consists of two parts, one for observation, and the other for colliding with the asteroid with a diameter of 160 meters.
The Sharjah Visual Observatory team includes: Dr. Hamid Majul Al Nuaimi, Professor of Astrophysics and Director of the University of Sharjah, Dr. Mashhour Al Waradat, Professor of Astrophysics in the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy at the University, Muhammad Fadl Talafha, astronomer at the Sharjah Visual Observatory at the Academy, and Ammar Abdullah Research assistant at the Academy.
