An indictment was filed today (Thursday) in the Acre Magistrate’s Court by the prosecution office of the Northern District of the police, against a 29-year-old resident of Taiba who is suspected of possessing illegal ammunition in the vehicle he was driving.

The suspect was caught about three weeks ago, according to the indictment, while traveling from the direction of Ahihud to Lis’or. The police officers of the Himar in the north set up a blockade at the Yas’or intersection, using an open police car. When the accused noticed the car, he swerved to the side of the road and turned onto a dirt road. The police noticed him, followed him and arrested him.

When they searched the vehicle he was driving, they were surprised to discover a huge stock of ammunition: 15,104 bullets that fit, among other things, M-16 rifles. The suspect is accused of carrying and transporting ammunition, in addition to obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duties.

Superintendent Amit Golan, head of the serious crimes department at the North Police Station, said: “I have been in the police for more than 20 years and I have never come across such a quantity of ammunition, this is ammunition that can arm an operational infantry battalion, hundreds of kilograms of ammunition that fits For M-16 rifles, various pistols and Carlo rifles […] It could have been used for attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers. Most of the ammunition originated in the IDF and was stolen from bases.”

The police estimates are that the accused ran a “distribution line” for the sale of ammunition at various stations. The value of the ammunition probably reaches hundreds of thousands of shekels.

Attorney Tomer Neve, who represents the accused, said that: “The accused denies any connection to the ammunition, the vehicle belongs to another person and is not owned by him, he was asked to take the vehicle from place to place and did not know what was in the trunk, we will work for his release.”
