Barendrechts Dagblad | Barendrecht proclaimed dementia-friendly municipality

by time news

In the Netherlands, 290,000 people live with dementia. In 2040 this is expected to be 500,000. In Barendrecht, about 700 people are currently struggling with dementia. It is estimated that by 2040 this number will have increased to about 1400 people. Serious numbers, and a serious subject. Since last week, the municipality of Barendrecht can officially call itself a ‘dementia-friendly municipality’. Alderman Miranda de Hoop received the certificate last week, applicable to World Alzheimer’s Day.

The municipality believes it is important to work as a dementia-friendly municipality, so that people with dementia continue to participate in society for as long as possible and informal carers are seen and supported. In recent years, the municipality has worked closely with Aafje, Laurens and KijkopWelzijn in a working group.

Actors and exhibition
Among other things, various initiatives have been developed to draw attention to dementia. For example, on World Alzheimer’s Day in 2020, actors were called in to pretend they had dementia. In this way residents were confronted with the subject. The shoppers, like shopkeepers, received information and advice about the disease and how to deal with it in shops and on the street. A year later, on World Alzheimer’s Day 2021, 2 tiles were placed in Barendrecht to draw attention to dementia. There was also an exhibition about dementia in the library.

Alzheimer Café
In addition, annual training courses are given to various organizations within Barendrecht to increase awareness and knowledge in the field of dementia. And every third Wednesday of the month there is an Alzheimer Café in the library Het Kruispunt. Always with a different subject. The purpose of the meetings is to provide residents with information and advice. It also serves as a contact moment for fellow sufferers.
