Rare Diseases, ‘Sma Path 2.0’ to train professionals on standard care

Become “Sma Path 2.0“, and training course dedicated to professionals in the care, assistance and rehabilitation of spinal muscular atrophy (Sma) coordinated by the specialists of the NeMo Clinical Centers. After the success of the first edition, the initiative continues which aims to offer more and more appropriate treatment responses, in light of the changes related to the new treatment treatments for this neuromuscular pathology.

Sma Path 2.0 is developed in three distance learning meetings that touch on as many aspects very important in continuation with the training course of 2021 – reads a note – and on the basis of international standards of care. From the overview of the therapeutic possibilities offered by new pharmacological therapies to the management of orthopedic, nutritional and emergency aspects, up to the psychological and psychosocial experiences of patients, their families and essential figures in taking charge of such complex pathologies.

In recent years, scientific research on SMA has led to the approval of pharmacological treatments that have profoundly changed the natural history of the disease. Spinal muscular atrophy – again the note – affects about 1 newborn in 10,000 worldwide and, according to estimates, today it affects about 850 people in Italy, most of whom are under the age of 16. Hence the need to revise standards of care.

Also for the 2.0 edition of the training course, the experts on spinal muscular atrophy make available to health professionals clinical experience and scientific know-how on pathology.

Training is coordinated by NeMO Clinical Centers since 2008 specialized in the treatment and research on neuromuscular diseases. Specifically, the scientific direction of the course is entrusted to prof. Eugenio Mercuri, child neuropsychiatrist, director of the Department of Women’s, Child and Public Health Sciences of the Agostino Gemelli Irccs University Polyclinic Foundation and scientific director of the pediatric area of ​​the NeMO Roma Clinical Center at Gemelli, to Prof. Valeria Sansone, neurologist, clinical and scientific director of the NeMO Clinical Center in Milan, at the Niguarda hospital and associate professor of Neurology at the University of Milan and to Prof. Marika Pane, child neuropsychiatrist, clinical director of the NeMO Center in Rome, pediatric area and associate professor in child neuropsychiatry at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome.

The course intended exclusively for healthcare professionals is free and active from 30 September 2022 to 30 June 2023 on the website www.smapath.it, where the program is also available. Participants will be able to decide whether to complete the learning questionnaire in the 2020/2022 three-year training period, by filling out the relevant form by 31 December 2022, or in the 2023/2025 training three-year period by filling out the form by 30 June 2023.

It will be possible to receive credits exclusively for one of the two training courses. The course confers 6 ECM training credits for the disciplines of: medicine and surgery, anesthesia and resuscitation, neurology, child neuropsychiatry, pediatrics, diseases of the respiratory system, physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopedics and traumatology, psychology, physiotherapy, neuro and psychomotor therapy of the developmental age, occupational therapist, dietician, nurse, pediatric nurse, biologist-food hygiene and nutrition.

The training course, promoted by VyvaMed, in collaboration with the NeMO Clinical Centers and the patronage of the Sma Families Association, with the non-conditioning sponsorship of Novartis. is accredited up to a maximum of 500 participants.
