1700 killed in severe floods and rains in Pakistan; 12,800 people were injured

Islamabad: It is reported that 1,700 people died and 12,800 people were injured due to floods caused by heavy rains in Pakistan. The information is based on the latest figures of the National Disaster Management Authority. Incessant rains and subsequent floods have caused extensive damage in Pakistan since mid-June.

Major damage was done across the country, including to infrastructure. The government has declared 81 districts in five of Pakistan’s six provinces as disaster-affected areas. By mid-September, 33 million people had been affected by the floods. At least 1,481 people died and 12,720 were injured. The report indicates that approximately 7.6 million people have been temporarily displaced.

1.8 million houses were damaged in the floods. Sindh province was the worst affected, with 1.5 million houses destroyed. The country is preparing to request an additional US$600 million from the United Nations for rehabilitation. A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Acting Secretary ED Humair Karim to discuss the matter.

The United Nations had earlier given 160 million US dollars as a relief aid. But it was found that this was not sufficient and further grant was requested. Due to the floods, the drinking water facility was disrupted in various parts of the country and people’s life became difficult. According to estimates, 3.5 million acres of agricultural crops were destroyed and more than 9,36,000 livestock died.
