In Loire-Atlantique, the municipality of a commune has decided to decorate its streets for Christmas without a light garland. She wants to save energy.

In Vair-Sur-Loire (Loire-Atlantique), the town hall has decided to remove the illuminated Christmas decorations in order to save energy. “Today, it’s true that we have no choice for the planet”says a woman. “I think it’s a good idea, at least it will really save money”, says a man. Families with children express more reservations. However, the municipality will put many Christmas decorations in the streets. They will not be electric, but in wood, made with recycled materials by volunteers.

“It changes the atmosphere a little bit, but hey, we hope to compensate for that with the decorations we’re going to make”, assures a volunteer. Some merchants are concerned about the lack of light decorations and the impact it could have on their business. “There may be less party spirit”, dreads a baker, who will put her own light decorations. Not having to pay for the rental of garlands, their installation and electricity should save the town hall 20,000 euros.
