Ukraine joined Spain and Portugal yesterday (Wednesday) in trying to host the World Cup in 2030. The partnership between the three countries was approved by the leaders of the three national football associations at UEFA headquarters.

“This is the dream of millions of Ukrainian fans. The dream of people who survived the horrors of the war or are still in the occupied territories, on which the Ukrainian flag will surely fly soon,” said Andriy Pavelko, president of the Football Association of Ukraine, at the press conference.

According to him, the move was approved by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is still busy repelling the Russian forces that invaded his country last February.

No details were given on how many matches will be held in Ukraine, or in which cities, but the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv has already hosted the finals of the Euros, the European Championships (2012) and the Champions League finals (2018).

“Now this is not the ‘Iberian’ proposal, this is the European proposal,” said the president of the Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubiales, at the press conference, according to the news agency AP. “Together we represent the power of change that football has in society.”

Spain and Portugal previously announced their joint bid in June 2021. The new bid joins the competition with hosting and will face a cooperation bid by Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia, as well as a South American joint bid by Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Chile.

FIFA will vote to choose the host in 2024.
