The series started on September 21 and already broke the record as one of the most watched series in the first week of its broadcast with 96.2 million views. In a recent interview on Netflix, the actor talked about taking on the fascinating and at the same time horrifying role of the murderer who was convicted of 15 murder charges and sentenced to 957 years in prison. To prepare for the role, co-creator Ryan Murphy had Owen watch an interview with Dahmer. In addition, Peters studied in depth the killer’s past through recordings of his conversations with psychologists and detectives. He also read biographies about Dahmer and analyzes of the 1992 police reports following the killer’s confessions.

In an interview, Owen said: “My jaw dropped when I realized that these horrors attributed to the killer happened in reality. It is important to respect the victims and their families in order to tell the story in the most authentic way possible.” The actor described the filming process as one of the hardest things he has done during his career, and claimed that he was very afraid of Dahmer’s actions. The actor also explained that in order to enter Dahmer’s mind, he had to dive into dark places and stay there for a period of time.”
