What is PlayStation Stars and how does it work?
With PlayStation Stars, you earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities. Some campaigns are easy to complete, such as Sony’s “Monthly Check-in” campaigns that simply require you to play any game to get the reward. Other campaigns will challenge you to win certain prizes, such as being among the first players to win the AAA Platinum title in your region.
Campaigns are updated regularly, and players can check the PlayStation app for when new campaigns are launched. The more campaigns you complete, the faster you level up. Leveling up gives you more rewards and digital collectibles. More on these later.
PlayStation Stars is currently exclusive to the PlayStation app. However, Sony says it is working on expanding the service to include consoles in the future, which means there will likely be a dedicated app on the PS5 or PS4.
Who can join PlayStation Stars?
Anyone with a PlayStation console, such as a PS4 or PS5, can join PlayStation Stars. Joining the service is free, although you must be an adult to have a registered PSN account in a region where the software is available. Membership and rewards cannot be shared or transferred between accounts.

While you will earn certain benefits for being a PlayStation Plus member, a PlayStation Plus membership is not required to join PlayStation Stars.
What rewards do PlayStation Stars offer?
There are two main types of rewards – loyalty points and digital collectibles. Points can be earned by purchasing games from the PlayStation Store. Points can then be redeemed in a catalog that includes PSN wallet funds, exclusive digital collectibles, and select PlayStation Store products. Points earned for purchasing or pre-ordering a game are approximately four percent of your purchases.
Digital collectibles are small 3D models of things PlayStation fans will enjoy, including figurines of famous characters from past games, devices, and consoles from Sony’s gaming product history. It’s kind of like an NFT, but it can’t be traded or sold, so they’re just there to impress. There will be new collectibles to earn regularly, very rare collectibles to strive for, or spontaneous surprises to collect.
Digital collectibles that you win or earn can be arranged on a display case within the PlayStation app. You can also set the display status for other players to see if you want to show off your collection.
Furthermore, PlayStation Stars’ leveling system places great emphasis on digital collectibles. With each level you reach, you’ll earn digital memorabilia. See a list of leveling levels and what they unlock below:
- Level 1 Milestones – Join the program and start completing campaigns
- Level 1 Perks – Digital Collectibles by completing campaigns, 1 Celebration collectible
- Level 2 Milestones – Purchase 1 complete game on PlayStation Store and win 1 Unusual Trophy
- Level 2 Perks – Level 2 Celebration Collectible and access to all Level 1 collectibles.
- Level 3 Milestones – Purchased 2 full games from the PlayStation Store and received 32 Unfamiliar Rewards
- Level 3 Perks – Collectible and Collectible Level 3 Birthday Party
- Level 4 Milestones – Purchased four complete games from the PlayStation Store and received 128 Unfamiliar Rewards
- Level 4 Perks – Collectible Celebrations, all collectibles from Level 1 through 3, and ‘Chat Priority Routing’.
One controversial aspect of this leveling system is that players will not be able to access the Chat Priority Routing until they reach Level 4. While it’s understandable to incentivize players to earn rewards and collectibles by playing games so they can buy and play more games, it’s not consumer friendly to get hung up on better customer service beyond a paywall.

If you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription and are a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita user, you can still join PlayStation Stars. However, you will only be able to earn points when you make purchases in the PlayStation Store on your console. You will not be able to raise your status with full game purchases on PlayStation Store with these consoles or be supported in any other way. To get the full experience with PlayStation Stars, you need to use a PS4 or PS5 controller.
