DECRYPTION – Faced with a fragile economic situation, Bruno Le Maire and his deputy minister, Gabriel Attal, are not sure of being able to respect their commitment, within the framework of the 2023 finance bill.

The government’s forecast of 1% growth in 2023 is unlikely to be sustainable due to the darkening economic context, to the point that experts do not rule out a recession next year. Even at the Ministry of the Economy, in the entourage of Bruno Le Maire, it is admitted that the situation is fragile. “Everything can change very quickly”we recognize.

Suffice to say that the objective of limiting the public deficit to 5% of GDP next year – target included in the 2023 finance bill – is more than precarious. And this is all the more so since even in the state of current government forecasts for growth, revenue and expenditure, Bruno Le Maire and his deputy minister, Gabriel Attal, are not sure of being able to meet their commitment.

“The public balance (…) could be worse than expected due to the underestimation of certain expenses”, also recently warned the High Council of Public Finances, an independent body attached to the Court of Auditors.
