The mayor of New York has sought help from US President Joe Biden as there is no space in the city’s shelters.
Adams also accused officials in Republican states of sending immigrants to New York out of political interest. Adams sees this as an attempt to take advantage of New York’s values and laws for the shelter. But Adams’ action has already been accused of political drama.
There is no space in the city’s shelters and there are 61,000 migrants, including 20,000 children. At present 40 hotels have been converted into shelters. More people are coming to New York than we can accommodate right away. Figures show that people from Latin American countries including Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua are arriving in the city via the US-Mexico border. New York’s public schools recently admitted 5,500 immigrant students.
The Texas governor calls Adams’ remarks hypocritical. The Texas governor tells Adams to ask President Joe Biden to toughen policy on the US-Mexico border. Adams also wants federal and state officials to increase financial support for New York. The Department of Homeland Security’s response to Adams’ request is that comprehensive efforts are being made to support cities. The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s counter-charge is that Republican governors are trying to sow chaos through their political theatrics.
