March 8, 1979: it was the first rebellion of Iranian women against the compulsory wearing of the veil

by time news

Where will the Iranian revolt end? The death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died three days after her arrest for not having worn her veil correctly, sparked a wave of demonstrations. Women who burn their hijab in public or cut their hair, schoolgirls who demonstrate bareheaded, shouting slogans hostile to the mullahs’ regime and its supreme guide, Ayatollah Khamenei… This spontaneous anger immediately collided with a fierce repression, which would have already caused a hundred deaths, as in 2009 during the “green movement” of Iranian youth.
