Sankarapuram :: People are suffering due to the increase in the price of vegetables in Sankarapuram farmers market.

At the Sankarapuram farmers market, farmers from surrounding villages bring and sell their produce like vegetables and fruits.

For the past few days, the price of vegetables sold in the farmers market has been many times higher than the vegetables sold on the 4-wheeler in the market.

A kilo of Budalangai in particular is sold for 20 rupees in mini trucks on the streets. A kg is sold at Rs 60 in the farmers market.

Similarly, brinjal sold at Rs 30 per kg is sold at Rs 60 per kg, papaya at Rs 40 per kg is sold at Rs 60, gourd at Rs 30 per kg is sold at Rs 50 and gourd at Rs 20 per kg is sold at Rs 40.

Farmers Market was started in Shankarapuram area with the objective of getting vegetables and fruits at lower prices from farmers directly to the public without middlemen than the outside market.

However, the prices of vegetables and fruits are many times higher than the outside market in Sankarapuram Farmers Market, so the general public avoids coming to the Farmers Market. A farmers market is functioning only nominally.

Agriculture authorities should take steps to prevent over-selling of vegetables at Sankarapuram farmers market and sell them at reasonable prices.
