Popular game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has announced a new Windows app that will soon replace Origin – a PC-exclusive launcher that debuted in 2011, designed to compete with other PC storefronts like Steam.

In 2020, Origin announced that their game library would be transferable to Steam and allowed the publisher to sell their games on the platform, however, even after the merger, users needed Origin to play EA titles they purchased from the digital distribution service.

EA says the app has begun rolling out to users, and EA claims this new app is “the fastest and lightest PC client to date,” according to a statement from the company, and the publisher has already renamed its EA Access and Origin Access services under the EA Play banner.

EA says the new app is currently only available for Windows PCs, meanwhile, Mac users will have to wait a bit longer for this new PC client while Origin continues to work for them.

Windows users who already have an Origin account will be automatically invited to move their account to the new EA app, and it’s important to note that existing Origin users will be able to easily transfer their games, cloud/local saves, friend lists, and other content to the new app.

EA claims that the new app has a more user-friendly design and is equipped with features like automatic game downloads and background updates. Unique to their friends to find them easily.

The app comes a decade after Origin was first launched, and the prominent mention of the app was in 2020 when EA decided to replace the platform with a new Windows client, and EA’s Origin registered a user base of more than 50 million users, however the service was criticized for security flaws and concerns about espionage.
