War in Ukraine: new Russian strikes on Zaporizhia leave at least 12 dead

by time news

The city of Zaporizhya again hit by Russian missiles. Shots overnight from Saturday to Sunday killed at least 12 people in the capital of the region annexed by Russia. The strikes hit houses and multi-storey apartment buildings, local officials report.

The provisional toll announced on Telegram by the governor of the region reports 12 people dead and 49 injured, including six children. The emergency response has already saved eight people from the rubble. “Most of the rockets hit residential buildings and private homes. A 9-storey building was partially destroyed. Five private homes were destroyed. (…) Twenty cars were damaged”, detailed Oleksandr Starukh.

“Absolute evil”, according to Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky quickly reacted: “More strikes on peaceful people. (…) Absolute wickedness. Absolute evil. Savages and terrorists,” he said on Telegram.

While the city is under Ukrainian control, the Russians seem to be stepping up their strikes, with a second salvo in just four days. Strikes in the middle of the night on Thursday had already caused the death of 17 people, including a child.

This Sunday’s strikes come the day after a huge explosion, attributed by Moscow to a truck bomb, on the Crimean Bridge, a key and symbolic infrastructure linking Russia to the peninsula annexed in 2014 to the detriment of Ukraine.
