Iker Casillas broke the net. The legendary former goalkeeper of Real Madrid, who won with the Blancos in the Champions League and with Spain in the World Cup and Euro, tweeted today (Sunday) on his Twitter account that he is gay. After about an hour and a half, after the tremendous buzz it created with hundreds of thousands of likes, the tweet was deleted. Later, the Spaniard also clarified the storm.

“I hope you respect me, I’m gay, happy Sunday,” he wrote Cassias on his Twitter page. Carles Puyol, the legendary captain of Barcelona who played with the goalkeeper in the Spanish national team, responded to him: “It’s time to tell our story, Iker.” Later, the porter clarified: “My account was hacked. Fortunately everything is fine now. I apologize to all my followers and of course also to the LGBT community”.

Puyol also apologized for his reaction: “I made a mistake. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no bad intentions and completely out of place. I understand that it may have hurt, I respect and support the LGBT community.”

The media in Spain reacted to the goalkeeper’s surprising statement. The media initially believed that his account had been hacked, which turned out to be true in retrospect, but on the other hand, some suspected that this was his way of stopping the speculation about the women he was dating, as recently he has even been linked to actress Alejandra Onyeva.

Between 2009 and 2021, Casillas was in a relationship with Spanish-Portuguese journalist Sara Carbonero, with whom the two have two children. Before her, the goalkeeper dated Abba Gonzalez between 2004 and 2008. Casillas’ tweet comes just days after he was linked to a possible romance even with Shakira, the singer with whom Gerard Pique recently broke up.

In May 2019, Casillas suffered a heart attack in Porto training and was forced to retire from football, with three Champions League wins, two Euros, one World Cup and five more Spanish championships with Real Madrid, among others.
