Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has canceled the contract given to a private person for public works road parking

The Corporation has canceled the agreement to grant parking to a hotel on MG Road in Thiruvananthapuram. The explanation of the Municipal Corporation is that the hotel owner has violated the terms of the agreement and that is why it was cancelled. The action is being taken while the Municipal Council is meeting today. There was a report from the Public Works Department that the action of the Municipal Corporation was not correct. The road was leased to a pro-CPM trade association leader.

The Chief Engineer of Public Works Roads Department had given a report that no part of MG Road is allowed to be rented out to any person or organization or to collect parking fee. This road is a public works asset. It was also stated in the report that it was given to the Kerala Road Fund Board for 15 years of maintenance.

There was a controversy when Thiruvananthapuram Corporation gave a part of MG Road to a private hotel for parking by writing a contract on a sealed paper for a rent of Rs 5000 per month. Following this, Chief Engineer Ajith Ramachandran submitted the report as requested by Public Works Minister PA Muhammad Riaz.

For years, traffic wardens appointed by the corporation have been allowing parking on both sides of MG Road by collecting fees. Police also gave permission for this.

While G. Sudhakaran was the Minister of Public Works, he expressed his opposition to this, but since the Corporation was governed by the LDF, there was no departmental action.

At the same time, neither the local department nor the urban affairs department has taken any action against the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation for making an illegal agreement to lease the part of the road over which they have no authority. After making the agreement, 7 council meetings of the corporation were held but this was not reported.

In the capital city, there are complaints that the police, the corporation and the works department do not intervene in the public works department roads including MG Road and national highways in front of private hotels where security personnel are controlling the traffic to allow visitors’ vehicles to pass.
