Kenyan Kangogo provisionally suspended for doping

by time news

Kenyan athlete Mark Kangogo, recent winner of the prestigious Sierre-Zinal trail, ahead of Kilian Jornet in particular, has been provisionally suspended for doping, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Tuesday October 11. Kangogo (33) tested positive for norandrosterone (anabolic steroid) and triamcinolone acetonide (glucocorticoid), without the IAU specifying the date of the test. Mark Kangogo distinguished himself in mid-August by winning the Sierre-Zinal trail (31 km, 2,200 meters of elevation gain) in Switzerland, ahead of Spaniard Andreu Blanes Reig and another Kenyan, Patrick Kipngeno. Spaniard Kilian Jornet, trail legend, took 5th place in the race before winning the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) at the end of the month. This announcement comes as doping cases have multiplied in Kenya since the beginning of the year. Kangogo is thus the 21st Kenyan athlete suspended in 2022 following suspicions or proven cases of doping. One of the world’s leading cross-country nations, Kenya has been placed in Category A on the World Athletics and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Watch List since 2016.
