Nellithurai Road is located in Mettupalayam Gandhi Maidan. Here, there are more than 75 tuber mandis. More than hundred trucks come and go to Mandi every day.
At Nellithurai Road and at the cross roads of Gandhi Maidan, which is full of mandis, pits have been dug to lay underground sewers.
After laying the pipeline, it is seen as muddy due to continuous rain. Trucks stuck in the mud are being pulled out with the help of boglines and cranes.
Tirupur Municipal Corporation’s Fourth Water Project Pipeline and Underground Sewerage Project pipe laying works have been completed on Nellithura Road. Mettupalayam Municipal Commissioner Vinod said last month that Nellithurai Road will be tarred following this.
However, even after a month, the work has not been done. Due to the rains of the last two days, the road is covered with more than a foot of mud.
In many places, the rain water has accumulated in the potholes and the motorists are in a lot of trouble. Municipal Commissioner Vinod said, “Due to continuous rains in Mettupalayam city, Nellithurai Road could not be tarred. After the rain stops, steps will be taken to lay tarred.”
Lorry drivers said, ‘There has been no rain in Mettupalayam for the past one month. Then the municipal authorities may have tarred the road.
Rain is likely for the next two months. We are driving lorries in mud and mud on the roads where mandis are located,’ they said.
